Coup d’Etat of 30 Prairial.

June 18, 1799: Sieyès was newly elected to the Directory. He allies himself with Barras, to make the other directors resign. It is a new ” coup ” (armed force is not used). Very quickly Sieyès and Barras opposed. The Assemblies gain in authority.

The royalist members of the Directory, Philippe-Antoine Merlin de Douai and La Révellière-Lépeaux are forced to resign, under threat of being brought to trial by the Councils.

The new Directory is shared between revisionists (around Sieyès, eager to revise the constitution and strengthen the executive) and members from the left, while Barras plays alliances to maintain himself.
